Speaker: Guy Lunardi, Sr. Product Manager, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Novell, Inc.
The session showcases an example of a Windows Desktop environment migrating to a complete Linux Desktop in a manufacturing context. The goals of this move are to reduce costs while using existing hardware, proposing new features, deploying applications with the same existing tools, and delivering to end users a simple and attractive desktop that does not require additional extensive training.
This innovative project makes possible to integrate Linux Desktops inside an environment of 75,000 workstations with Windows Active Directory and Lotus Notes. The target Linux Workstation is similar to Windows in terms of major features and the visual identity. It has been integrated into the infrastructure without any modifications to it and the desktop management tool has been slightly extended to integrate Linux.
Windows systems are not replaced but complemented by Linux Desktops.
