This session will cover licensing, business models, and customer experience where open source DBs fit with proprietary software in a solution stack. Issues to be discusssed: Why did IBM and CA open source Cloudscape and Ingres respectively? What was the internal business case? What has the market reception been? What's in it for customers?; How does a company build a viable (money making) business on an open source DB with lessons learned from MySQL and Sleepycat Software What is the licensing strategy? Two global vendors give away the code. Two smaller ISVs give it away and also sell licenses (dual license); Is the DB next in the solution stack to be composted into the commodity layer and what does this mean to customers? What are the pluses and minuses for customers in using open source DBs?
