Untangle, ACCRC and GES will be organizing a massive installfest to donate open source (Ubuntu) computers to schools in need. It is a great opportunity to get computers to children that have little or no technology access, introduce Free & Open Source software to new users and keep thousands of pounds of toxic electronic waste from the landfill.

| |
The hardware will be supplied by the Alameda County Computer Resource Center (ACCRC), which recycles discarded computers from businesses, government and the general public.
The typical install will be done on a PIII, 256MB Ram system with a 20GB drive. While we must maintain the specs above, with hardware coming from so many divers sources there will be plenty of opportunities for hardware hacking!

The installation will include Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop with OpenOffice, Firefox, the latest patches and additional multimedia content. The initial installation will be done from custom iso images on bootable CDs with the additional content and patches installed over the network as Debian packages.

At the first Installfest for Schools on March 1st, 350 Ubuntu 7.10 desktops were built from recycled computers for schools. It was a great one-day success having drawn approximately 130 F/OSS community volunteers to lend a hand. …but imagine what we can do over the entire LinuxWorld Expo with thousands of community members in attendance!

LinuxWorld attendees are encouraged to join the installfest by installing Ubuntu, hacking older hardware, or donating unwanted computers.
